Lustlab Ad of the Week: 4/26

6B is a pencil with soft lead (“B” = black); HB is right in the middle (your chewed-on yellow No. 2 pencil is an HB); 6H is hard. Really hard.

“Lustlab Ad of the Week” is a comic adaptation of one of the week’s kinky personal ads in Seattle alt-weekly The Stranger, and I post them here every Wednesday. See it on their site here. LUST, the “Lustlab Ad of the Week” book collection, is scheduled to be released with Fantagraphics Books in January 2008.

Reality-Based Nominee

Late last night I checked my email and found a happy if strangely formal note from Kim Thompson of Fantagraphics Books:

“I am pleased to inform you that I LOVE LED ZEP has been nominated for a 2007 Eisner Award in the ‘Best Reality-Based Work’ category.”

He then went on to say I had to keep mum about it until today, when the nominations were officially announced. It’s a big honor – the Eisners are kind of like the Oscars of comics. (Go ahead, Ma, you can tell people now!)

Lustlab Ad of the Week: 4/19

A little something for everyone! Find: the magical monk, the guy hanging upside-down, the bong. Oh and, the people fucking.

Lustlab Ad of the Week: 4/12

This ad introduced me to a new term: “cosplay.” That’s “costumes” + “play” – its devotees enjoy dressing up like anime or video game characters, or maybe unicorn princesses. The Japanese text in the balloon, if I got it right, says “May I have a tissue?” or “Tissue?”

Lustlab Ad of the Week: 4/5

I showed my brother the pencil version of this drawing while we were videoconferencing, and he asked, “Is the guy hanging by his dick?” He wasn’t – he was just on a regular trapeze – but of course he really did need to be hanging by his dick. I thanked Matt for the idea, which made him uncomfortable. “I thought that was what you drew.” Ha ha, bro, YOU thought of it yourself.

Con Culture

This past Saturday’s Emerald City ComiCon was the first con I’ve attended in eons. And yet, it felt so familiar. (Haven’t I seen that guy before, the one with the big bag of comics, totally picking his nose?) Eric Reynolds of Fantagraphics told me that I Love Led Zeppelin was the top seller at the Fantagraphics booth that day, very cool. Many thanks to my students who dropped by, and to that animated red-headed woman who came back to the table three times to buy more books.

I lucked into a signing shift with one of my favorite cartoonists – one of my favorite people, for that matter, Jim Woodring. We meet the people:

At the after-con party at the Fantagraphics store, I bought a red (lower right — now out of stock!) Mr. Bumper, the latest fantastic vinyl toy designed by Jim. Is this some inspired craziness or what? And with moving parts!:

See Me, Hear Me

1.

See me: I’ll be at Emerald City ComiCon, Saturday, March 31, 3 – 5pm.

Seattle hosts this increasingly popular comics convention, and I have the honor of sitting next to Jim Woodring at the Fantagraphics booth, where we will sign books, shake hands, and drink from water bottles. There will also be a party that evening at the Fantagraphics store, and although I expect it will be a total fucking madhouse involving at least one Star Trek costume, I’ll be there, too.

2.

Hear me: I’ll be interviewed on “Inkstuds” radio program, Thurs. March 29, 2 – 3pm.

Podcast will be posted at www.inkstuds.com

March 8 is International Women’s Day (and my birthday, thank you) so Robin McConnell, host of Inkstuds, is featuring women cartoonists for the month. This will be the second time I am publicly referred to as an “inkstud” (a thrill!).

Lustlab Ad of the Week: 3/29

In addition to being “obsessed” with Frida Kahlo, this woman mentioned an interest in Karada, a kind of Japanese bondage, so that’s what I used for the rope corset. (Step-by-step instructions on that link. It doesn’t look too hard, actually!)

Big Fuckin’ Hands

Et voila, my Fifth Annual Seattle Erotic Art Festival paintings (with many thanks to my fabulous intern, Morgan, for cleaning up my dimly- and unevenly-lit photos) – all 4′ x 4′, matte acrylic on Sintra. Sintra is a really thick, durable, rollable, plastic posterboard, with a nice sheen. It’s one of those wacky new plastics with a number of different properties (freeze it! heat it! shred it!) and apparently you can make a suit of armor out of it, too.
